Had the wonderful experience of attending a conference this past weekend in Miami, where Avinash Kaushik was a keynote speaker. In an 90 minute presentation, Avinash took his audience of Internet Marketing professionals through an array of ideas and thought processes that he summarized beautifully early on: “Don’t Suck”.
What a refreshing evaluation of our industry! Don’t Suck – don’t be bad at what you do, and the rest will follow. Try not to be lousy. Keep yourself from stinking.
It really is the baseline that most of us forget that establishes what improvements are made. You can’t build the second floor of a house until the first is complete, and the first floor needs a solid foundation. If the foundation sucks, the rest will collapse.
So if you want to create a good PPC campaign for your client, don’t suck at Google AdWords or Yahoo or Bing Search Marketing. If you stink at Google Analytics, don’t think you can help with your client’s Internet business analysis. If you are lousy with social media tools yourself, you can’t pretend to be the expert that your clients need in Social Media Marketing.
So simple, so direct, and so often forgotten. It was pleasant to bask in the light of someone so accomplished in his field, yet ready to take things back to basics. We all need to be reminded that you build from the bottom up, not the top down.
